Motorized transport has grown substantially in sub-Saharan Africa. This has benefited some sections of the population, but certain problems need to be tackled urgently. These include inefficient fuel use, the spiralling costs of fuel wastage, the lack of systematic transport management and urban air pollution. This text presents transport energy research findings from two very different countries: highly urbanized Mauritius, which has successfully made the transition to a booming, middle-income economy; and Ethiopia, which has only just begun the transition to a market-oriented economy. Policy measures are extracted that are appropriate and feasible in the wider African context.
