What is the real nature of Design Expertise and how is that expertise acquired and developed? Design Expertise explores what it takes to become an expert designer. It examines the perception of expertise in design and asks what knowledge, skills, attributes and experiences are necessary in order to design well. Lawson and Dorst develop a new model of design expertise and show how design expertise can be developed. It features an original contribution to theory in architecture and design from two leading scholars and practitioners in the field. It includes short, accessible case studies and quotes of well known designers and architects that provide real-life stories on the nature and development of design expertise. This book is designed for all students, teachers, practitioners and researchers in architecture and design. To enable all readers to explore the book in flexible ways, the authors' words are always found on the left hand page. On the right are diagrams, illustrations and the voices of designers, teachers and students and occasionally others too. Design Expertise provides a provocative new reading on the nature of design and creative thought. Bryan Lawson is both an architect and a psychologist who has written widely on the nature of design processes. His previous books in this field include How Designers Think , What Designers Know and Design in Mind . He has been Head of School and Dean of Architecture at Sheffield University and held visiting posts in Australia, Hong Kong, Netherlands, Malaysia, and Singapore. Kees Dorst has a background in industrial design and philosophy. After a career in design practice, he has moved to academia where he studies the way designers think and work. He is now Professor of Design at the University of Technology, Sydney. He has published numerous articles and four books - most recently the book Understanding Design - 175 Reflections on Being a Designer . This first book to address the nature of 'expertise' in design; will help students understand how to become a respected architect and designer. Provocative contribution to established literature in theory of architecture and design from a leading architecture scholar; will provide an original perspective in this field for researchers and students. Short, accessible case studies of well known designers and architects underpin theoretical learning.
